Arrival and Set-up

 

  • Early in the morning your team will travel to the outskirts of Chacraseca to small rural communities by van

  • At the school and/or community leader's home your team will divide the rooms to structure your clinic: triage, eye exam, atrial fibrillation and diabetes screening, patient rooms and pharmacy

  • Your team must be organized in order to assure you have all of the necessary supplies and medications for each clinic day

  • Patients travel many miles and will wait for hours to be seen and therefore it is imperative your team is prepared for the day

  • Each evening, students will resupply bags and tally patient data.

Home Calls 

 

  • This is a vital service provided to patients that are not able to make it to the clinic

  • Your team and Nicaraguan guide may travel on foot to the utmost rural parts of Chacraseca to reach those that need medical attention

  • Your team will carry all necessary or anticipated supplies with you

  • This is a great opportunity to see different parts of Nicaragua 

Patients

 

  • Many patients will only seek medical attention when a medical team is in their area

  • Your team will only be in a particular region of Chacraseca for a day and therefore timeliness, teamwork, cutural sensitivity and care, as well as organization are key to helping as many patients as possible

  • Teams will see adults and children

  • Many patients suffer from chronic pain, kidney failure, and headaches due to the nature of their work and their living environment

  • Education about adequate water intake is important in this patient population
